Star Trek: The Motion Picture theatrical release poster. Tagline: "There is no comparison." Be sure to click the image above for a hi-resolution version!
Size: 30" x 40"
Artist/Illustrator: Bob Peak
Designer: Spiros Angelikas
Release Year: 1979
Region: North America
Notes:
- Tagline Note: No comparison, lower center. Two tags were used on this poster art in all its formats ("The human adventure is just beginning" and "There is no comparison").
- The number stamped at the bottom right and along the sides, 790177, is the NSS (National Screen Service) number for this film. The first two digits represent the release year, while the last four represent the film’s sequential release position for the year (TMP was number 177 for 1979). (From 1940 until the mid-1980’s, the NSS controlled production and distribution for nearly all the movie posters, lobby cards, etc, for films released in the United States.)
- Fine print at the bottom right side of the poster indicates it is the property of the NSS and it "must be returned immediately after use."
- The small logo at the bottom center-left is the trademark label of the Graphic Arts International Union.
- See this post for a closer look at this artwork including text-free images, variants, and preliminary sketches.
- The tiny
L-shapes in each corner of this particular poster seem to be trim marks, although trimming the
poster along these lines would cut off the NSS information in the
margins.
