• I speculate that this poster was unlicensed, given that neither the poster nor the ad contains the words "Star Trek." The ad does use a lot of inferential phrasing like "the final frontier."
  
• Greenberg's lists this as follows: 1974. "Stardate 7431.09." [Poster lettering reads 7431:63. -STP] Color art, lettered. Heads of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, and the Enterprise with flanking Klingon ships. 23" x 32".
• The ad copy boasts of "full color that will give your eyeballs an Andromeda strain" — Robert Wise directed the film adaptation of Michael Crichton's The Andromeda Strain in 1971, and would later be tapped to direct Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979).

• Photographers / designers unknown. The third design uses as its background the Roger Huyssen "starburst" TMP advance art.
• In the first design, the image of the orbital office complex (bottom center left) is a still from the film which has been rotated 180° so that the model is shown upside down.
  
• Sizes either 17" x 22" or 20" x 24", sources conflict.
  
• These posters were given away as a mail-in offer from Procter & Gamble in 1979, through their Crest toothpaste, Secret deodorant, and Prell shampoo brands. The reverse side of each poster was printed with the text "FREE Star Trek poster with the purchase of Crest, Secret, or Prell" as shown below (approximate re-creation).

• Greenberg’s describes “Artist Cheryl Freundt’s blue-wash art of San Francisco Bay’s Golden Gate Bridge” with “portraits of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Chekov, and Uhura from upper left to lower right-hand corner” and lists this as a “pre-production promo poster.” (I doubt this is pre-production art, since the characters are in their final movie costumes; Sulu, in particular, is illustrated in a pose and expression directly referencing a scene in the finished movie. Perhaps “pre-release” poster would be more accurate.)
• Greenberg’s lists this in three sizes: 18" x 24" (original retail release); 18" x 28" for a second retail release in 1990; and 22" x 28" for a third release, also in 1990.
• The original art for this poster (see below) was sold at a 2011 auction, where it was described as: “Ca. 1986 chalk pastel on 19" x 24" illustration paper by Cheryl Freundt for a Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home commemorative poster issued to its fan base by Lincoln Enterprises.”

Star Trek: TMP "Enterprise In Deep Space" Sales Corp Poster (1979)

Star Trek: The Motion Picture "Enterprise In Deep Space" promotional poster produced by Sales Corporation of America, 1979 and distributed in various formats.

Notes:

• Photographer / designer unknown.
  
• The cast lineup at the bottom is reminiscent of the 1978 teaser poster for TMP. Notably absent from the lineup is Mr. Chekov, replaced here by the beloved characters "Arcturan," "Vulcan Master," and "Lizard Man."
  
• This image was used for at least three different printed posters. (1) Greenberg's describes a coupon inserted inside Lesney AMT's 1979 model kits of the Klingon Cruiser and Vulcan Shuttle which offered three different full color posters (see below). The premium 22" x 34" single-sided version of this design was offered for $3.

• (2) A double-sided version, also 22" x 34", was included in a special TMP ViewMaster Gift Set. Side one is as shown above, with the reverse being an anaglyphic 3D (red-and-blue offset) version of the same scene, which one could view with the included "Spock Vision" 3D glasses. The Gift Set, #2362, also included three story reels, a ViewMaster viewer, and a booklet [source].
• (3) This image was also used for a promotional poster which measured approximately 20" x 24". This version was apparently offered by a fan club of some sort ("the Clubhouse"), as the reverse appears to advertise the next poster in the series as a Mork & Mindy poster (M&M was produced by Paramount's television arm, so it's possible "the Clubhouse" was Paramount-related). • Various online comments have reported that these posters were given away for free at theater concession stands with the purchase of a Coke.
• An ad in Starlog #202 (May 1994) describes this poster as follows: Colorful Jerome Tarpley artwork was a Coca-Cola premium celebrating first STAR TREK movie, but was available only in selected theaters. Kirk, Spock, McCoy and other crew members, with the Enterprise in background. Small inset illustrations show Enterprise interior. 1979. 18"x24". $9.95

It is possible this item is French-Canadian, however, as the size is given as 47" x 63"—the French "Grande," the standard movie poster size in France—I believe this poster is from France. The McDonald's restaurant logo at the bottom indicates this was a promotional item.

• This is almost certainly a poster for the home video release (though those typically feature pricing and/or release date information)—note the "CIC Video" logo in the bottom right. Outside the U.S., CIC Video was Paramount's distribution arm for home video releases from 1980-2000 (Wikipedia).
• This is possibly a West German poster, as I am not sure of the release date for the German-language home video release of STIV, nor am I sure when this poster was printed (STIV was released theatrically in West Germany March 26, 1987).
• Note that the only German language on the poster is the German title—the credits block and logotypes are in English.

 • In 1985, Paramount Home Video began to release the entire run of the original Star Trek series on home video in North America, putting out groups of ten episodes at a time in the VHS, Beta, and LaserDisc formats. With the release of each new episode group, a new promotional poster was sent to retailers for in-store advertising. This poster was for Group 5, released in November 1986. • Presumably, Garland artist used this shot from the episode "Balance of Terror" as a reference for Sulu, Chekov, and Scotty, replacing Kirk with Chekov. Image via Memory Alpha.

 

• Circa 1986, a slightly altered version of this image, with a blank black area below the bridge crew, was used for a smaller retail poster (12.5" x 19"), shown below.

• A cropped version of Garland's painting was also used as the centerfold of Pocket Books's 1988 Star Trek "Celebration Calendar." Calendar cover and centerfold poster shown below.
