Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home Lincoln Ent. Retail Poster (1986)

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home retail poster from Lincoln Enterprises.

Size: Various (see Notes)
Artist/Illustrator: Cheryl Freundt
Release Year: 1986
Notes:

  • Greenberg’s describes “Artist Cheryl Freundt’s blue-wash art of San Francisco Bay’s Golden Gate Bridge” with “portraits of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Chekov, and Uhura from upper left to lower right-hand corner” and lists this as a “pre-production promo poster.” (I doubt this is pre-production art, since the characters are in their final movie costumes; Sulu, in particular, is illustrated in a pose and expression directly referencing a scene in the finished movie. Perhaps “pre-release” poster would be more accurate.)
  • Greenberg’s lists this in three sizes: 18" x 24" (original retail release); 18" x 28" for a second retail release in 1990; and 22" x 28" for a third release, also in 1990.
  • The original art for this poster (see below) was sold at a 2011 auction, where it was described as: “Ca. 1986 chalk pastel on 19" x 24" illustration paper by Cheryl Freundt for a Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home commemorative poster issued to its fan base by Lincoln Enterprises.”

  •  Below, the Lincoln Enterprises entry for this poster in their 1987 catalog.

Alternate Version / Other Art

The artwork shown below may represent an alternate concept by Freundt for the final poster shown above, or may have been created for a different purpose. If you have any information on the provenance of this image, please leave a comment!

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home - "Gareth" Art

The international art for Star Trek IV's theatrical poster campaigns is credited only to "Gareth." I have not been able to determine whether this is a first or last name, or locate any other information on the artist.

The purpose of this entry is to highlight a couple of stray uses of the Gareth artwork. Above, a lobby card for Star Trek IV (one of a set); this is the only time I have seen the Gareth art text-free (be sure to click the image above for a hi-resolution version).

Below, a VHS front cover for Star Trek IV from Sweden (where the film is known as Resan hem; translated, "The journey home"). This artwork is unique as far as I know: it fuses the Gareth art with Bob Peak's U.S. theatrical art for the film. It sort of works!

Bob Peak At The Movies (Mohawk Paper) (1987)

In 1987, the Mohawk paper company produced an advertising portfolio featuring a selection of Bob Peak’s movie artwork on their paper stock, called Bob Peak At The Movies. The portfolio includes 15 lithographs (11" x 15") on various samples of the company’s heavy stock, featuring richly colored text-free versions of Peak’s poster art for Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (shown together above), as well as for Apocalypse Now, Camelot, Every Which Way But Loose, Excalibur, Funny Girl, Hair, Islands In The Stream, Missouri Breaks, My Fair Lady, Pennies From Heaven, Rollerball, and West Side Story.

Each lithograph has text on the reverse side with the film’s title, year, studio, art director, and agency, as well as copyright information and text indicating the paper type and the name and address of Mohawk Paper Mills, Inc (examples shown below).

Alli empiezaba* la aventura de todos los tiempos." (Automatic translation: "To save our world it was necessary to ask for help from the men of the 23rd century. *Note this is slightly different than the tagline on the Argentinean one sheet.

Size: 26" x 37"
Artist/Illustrator: Gareth
Designer: Unknown
Release Year: 1987
Region: Unknown
Notes:

  • Unsure of country of origin. According to IMDb, Star Trek IV was released with similar Spanish titles in Argentina (Viaje a las estrellas IV: Misión: Salvar la tierra), Mexico (Viaje a las estrellas IV - Misión: Salvar la Tierra), Peru (Misión: Salvar la Tierra), Spain (Star Trek IV: Misión, salvar la Tierra), and with an alternate title in Spain (Misión: Salvar la Tierra).
  • Image source gives the size of this poster as 26" x 37"; this is not a standard poster size I'm aware of.
  • Need more info on artist "Gareth."
  • This artwork was also used for the international one sheet, the German A1, the Italian 2-Fogli, and the Australian daybill.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home German Home Video Release Poster (Year Unknown)

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (Zurück in die Gegenwart) German home video release poster. (Title translation: "Back to the present.")

Size: German A1 (23" x 33")
Artist/Illustrator: Bob Peak
Designer: Spiros Angelikas
Release Year: 1987 (Theatrical)
Region: Germany
Notes:

  • This is almost certainly a poster for the home video release (though those typically feature pricing and/or release date information)—note the "CIC Video" logo in the bottom right. Outside the U.S., CIC Video was Paramount's distribution arm for home video releases from 1980-2000 (Wikipedia).
  • This is possibly a West German poster, as I am not sure of the release date for the German-language home video release of STIV, nor am I sure when this poster was printed (STIV was released theatrically in West Germany March 26, 1987).
  • Note that the only German language on the poster is the German titlethe credits block and logotypes are in English.
  • This artwork was also used for a Japanese B2 theatrical poster and a Japanese souvenir program, as well as for the North American theatrical release poster, a Spanish theatrical release poster, and a French promo poster.

Size: Unknown (See note)
Artist/Illustrator: Unknown
Designer: Unknown
Release Year: 1987
Region: Brazil
Notes:

  • Size unknown, no good source for this image. Additionally, HA lists many wildly different sizes as "Brazilian one sheets."
  • IMDb lists two Portuguese language title variants for Star Trek IV, used in Portugal (Star Trek IV: Regresso à Terra) and Brazil (Jornada nas Estrelas IV: A Volta para Casa, closest to what is seen above). Star Trek IV was released in Brazil May 7, 1987.
  • This art was also used for the Japanese B2 poster and chirashi, as well as the Argentinean one sheet poster. This poster art uses a photo collage design featuring the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, aka the Bay Bridge, rather than the Golden Gate Bridge as depicted in other promo art for the film (as well as in the film itself).

  • This poster art uses a photo collage design featuring the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, aka the Bay Bridge, rather than the Golden Gate Bridge as depicted in other promo art for the film (as well as in the film itself).
