"To Serve The Empire" Klingon Recruiting Poster by Dru Blair (1997)

Notes:

• A version of this image was originally painted by Dru Blair for the cover of the Star Trek Communicator's "Special Klingon Issue," shown below, published in October / November 1995. Blair's other Star Trek work includes over 30 novel covers for Pocket Books, and several posters / prints / lithographs. [Dru Blair at Memory Alpha]

• In their March/April 1997 issue, the Communicator offered an exclusive 24" x 36" poster print of the painting on "100 lb. high quality gloss poster stock suitable for framing." The poster was offered for $14.95 plus shipping and handling. (See the full-page catalog ad below; click to enlarge.) The retail poster appeared as shown in my main image above; it did not include the magazine's logo or the official fan club logo as on the catalog page.

• The retail poster, dated 1996 by the artist, differs from the earlier version in a few ways. The artist's signature has changed, as have the portraits used for the Klingon characters flanking the far left and far right. The original artwork featured the minor characters of Klag on the left and B'iJik on the right; the revised painting features Kor on the left, and possibly Kahless on the right, with the addition of a bat'leth.

 • Circa 1998, the Official Fan Club also offered a cropped version of this painting on a 4" x 5" sticker, shown below, as part of their membership welcome/renewal kit. These kits also included other paper ephemera such as postcards, posters, and a membership card.

 
 • As of 2021, Blair's website (last updated in 2015) contains no mention of his Star Trek work, instead focusing solely on contemporary American imperial hardware. However, ca. 2006-2011, drublair.com offered four Star Trek prints—three featuring the USS Voyager, and this one, entitled "To Serve The Empire." Described as "depict[ing] the essence of a Klingon Fleet recruitment poster (not that any encouragement was needed!)," it was offered as a 24" x 30" open edition poster for $25.

"Spock is Dead?" Lincoln Ent. Retail Poster (1982)

• Although this poster was first sold as a Wrath of Khan tie-in, the photo of Spock is clearly from The Motion Picture.
  
• Greenberg's lists two versions of this poster. The first is described as "Lincoln Enterprises #P2170, 1987. Photo close-up of Spock facing left with eyes in light, background in deep shadow. 24" x 36"." Indeed this poster does appear in the 1987 Lincoln catalog, sans text (see below; click to enlarge).

• The second Greenberg's listing reads: "Intergalactic, distributor, 1987. 'Spock Is Dead?' poster. Same close-up photo as Lincoln #P2170 with addition of small tear in Spock’s eye and small lettering in lower right. 24" x 36"." Presumably, "Intergalactic" here refers to Intergalactic Trading Company, a distributor of sci-fi collectibles.
• A few issues with this description: 1) Although it does appear in some form in the 1987 Lincoln catalog, the copyright date on this poster is 1982. 2) The tear is not a new addition with this version — in fact, as we can see in the catalog scan above, Lincoln titled their text-free poster "The Tear." 3) Image source gives dimensions as 22.25" x 34", not 24" x 36". Is there a third version of this poster?
• The Official Price Guide lists this poster simply as "Spock is dead? Star Trek II poster, Lincoln Enterprises."

• I speculate that this poster was unlicensed, given that neither the poster nor the ad contains the words "Star Trek." The ad does use a lot of inferential phrasing like "the final frontier."
  
• Greenberg's lists this as follows: 1974. "Stardate 7431.09." [Poster lettering reads 7431:63. -STP] Color art, lettered. Heads of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, and the Enterprise with flanking Klingon ships. 23" x 32".
• The ad copy boasts of "full color that will give your eyeballs an Andromeda strain" — Robert Wise directed the film adaptation of Michael Crichton's The Andromeda Strain in 1971, and would later be tapped to direct Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979).

"Regular Edition" in this letter differentiates this poster from the special limited edition print, signed and numbered by Cushman and printed on 110-lb Eloquence stock.
  

Star Trek 25th Anniversary Poster - Tom Jung Art (1991)

Greenberg’s lists this poster as follows: “To Boldly Go Where No One Has Gone Before,” titled work executed by artist Tom Jung in blues, pale golds, and flesh tones with art scene inset on broad black border with silver outlining. Shows head portraits of Captains Kirk and Picard beneath rear view of movie Enterprise and cloudy sunburst. Poster title is lettered on top with “25th Anniversary 1966-1991” on the bottom.” Original retail price $25. Part of “The Official Star Trek Silver Anniversary Commemorative Art Collection Series” issued by the Starstruck Corporation (one of two in the series). These were limited edition fine art poster prints on heavy paper stock.

The Jung artwork was also used as the VHS box art for the home video release of the Star Trek 25th Anniversary TV special, shown below.

• Greenberg’s describes “Artist Cheryl Freundt’s blue-wash art of San Francisco Bay’s Golden Gate Bridge” with “portraits of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Chekov, and Uhura from upper left to lower right-hand corner” and lists this as a “pre-production promo poster.” (I doubt this is pre-production art, since the characters are in their final movie costumes; Sulu, in particular, is illustrated in a pose and expression directly referencing a scene in the finished movie. Perhaps “pre-release” poster would be more accurate.)
• Greenberg’s lists this in three sizes: 18" x 24" (original retail release); 18" x 28" for a second retail release in 1990; and 22" x 28" for a third release, also in 1990.
• The original art for this poster (see below) was sold at a 2011 auction, where it was described as: “Ca. 1986 chalk pastel on 19" x 24" illustration paper by Cheryl Freundt for a Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home commemorative poster issued to its fan base by Lincoln Enterprises.”

 • In 1985, Paramount Home Video began to release the entire run of the original Star Trek series on home video in North America, putting out groups of ten episodes at a time in the VHS, Beta, and LaserDisc formats. With the release of each new episode group, a new promotional poster was sent to retailers for in-store advertising. This poster was for Group 5, released in November 1986. • Presumably, Garland artist used this shot from the episode "Balance of Terror" as a reference for Sulu, Chekov, and Scotty, replacing Kirk with Chekov. Image via Memory Alpha.

 

• Circa 1986, a slightly altered version of this image, with a blank black area below the bridge crew, was used for a smaller retail poster (12.5" x 19"), shown below.

• A cropped version of Garland's painting was also used as the centerfold of Pocket Books's 1988 Star Trek "Celebration Calendar." Calendar cover and centerfold poster shown below.
